Minutes 1 June 1983

The 304th Stated Meeting of Far East Lodge No. 1, F. & A. M. was held at the Masonic Temple, No. 31, Yamashita-cho, Naka-ku, Yokohama, Japan on the 1st day of June 1983.

A Lodge of MMs was opened in due and ancient form at 1950 hours with WB LaSalle, WM in the East, Bro. Otani, SW in the West, and MWB Nishiyama, CH (Acting) JW in the South.

The WM recognized the Distinguished Brethren as listed in the Tiler's Register of this date.

He then announced that MWB James L. Johnston, GM of Masons in Japan was without and would be received with Grand Honors. MWB Johnston was received with Grand Honors and seated in the East.

He then announced that this being our Stated Meeting for the month of June 1983, the first order of business would be the reading of the minutes of the last Stated Meeting and all subsequent Special Meetings.

The Secretary read the minutes and they were approved as corrected.

Next was the Treasurer's Report given by MWB Yamada, PGM. It was moved by MWB Yamada and seconded by WB Hodges, PM that the Treasurer's report be approved as read, subject to the usual audit. MOTION CARRIED

The Secretary reported that there were no bills for this period.

Next was the report of the several committees:

WB LaSalle announced that there would be no committee reports since he has not yet appointed members to the various committees. He stated that appointments would be made not later than next stated meeting

RECEPTION OF PETITIONS: None

CORRESPONDENCE: The Secretary read the GM's Procalamation proclaiming the period 28 July thru 3 Aug 1983 as "International Rainbow Week". He then read the GL Monthly Bulletin datd May 20 1983; a letter from a Lodge Brother and a letter from the Toni Oasis Shrine Clubs soliciting donations and support. WB Hodges moved and MWB Yamada seconded a motion that this Lodge purchase a full page ad in the annual Shrine Ceremonial at a cost of ¥50,000. MOTION CARRIED

NEW BUSINESS: None.

Before closing, WB LaSalle called upon MWB Johnston who provided the Lodge with an update of various actions that have been initiated by the Grand Lodge. Among the subject discussed were:

  1. Use of the Square and Compasses by other than Masonic organizations in Japan.
  2. Use of the American Flag in constituent Lodges.
  3. Use of the shortened proficiencies for the three degrees.
  4. Status of MWB Nishiyama's book on Freemasonry.
  5. Proposed proclamation which will declare September 1983 as "Visitation Month" for all members of this Grand Jurisdiction.
  6. MWB Johnston's upcoming visit to the Grand Lodge of California in August.
  7. The use of bilingual stationary in Grand Lodge and the constituent Lodges.
  8. Methods of submitting resolutions for action by Grand Lodge.

The WM then announced that there being no further business to come before this Lodge of MMs, we would proceed to close. Peace and harmony prevailing, this Lodge was closed in due and ancient form at 2124 hours with WB LaSalle, WM in the East, Bro. Otani, SW in the West, and MWB Nishiyama, CH (Acting) JW in the South.
